The Artist I ended the school year with is Henri Matisse. Matisse is one of my favorite artists to teach about because he uses really, really bright and vibrant colors. Matisse is most known for mixing patterns on top of patterns on top of other patterns. As Matisse grew older, he became ill. He was no longer able to paint the way he did when he was younger. Matisse began to use "cut paper" instead of painting.
Fourth graders were told to pretend they were Henri Matisse and they were given the assignment of decorating a room in their house (the way Matisse would). As you can see......I got some really interesting interior designs! Students did a great job of not only mixing different patterns on top of one another, but they really used some beautiful colors as well. The projects incorporated Matisse's painting style, as well as his "cut paper" technique.
All grade levels worked on Matisse designs. Painting, printmaking and cut paper were the focus throughout various grades. I loved them ALL......but I can't picture them all.....so I focused on Fourth Grade.
At the very bottom of the page is a photo of Henri Matisse along with an example of his artwork.
