Welcome to Rolesville's Visual Arts site. Touring this site will give you a better understanding of Wake County's Visual Arts curriculum, and at the same time......you'll get a taste of some wonderful art work created by the students here at Rolesville Elementary.
Pictured on this page are some project highlights of the year. Above I have pictured part of a "CITYSCAPE MURAL" grade levels 1-5 worked on in their spare time. Fifth graders drew the cityscape with marker and then I cut the cityscape up into puzzle pieces. Students from different classes were given these sections to color on their own. Once all of the sections were colored, I "taped" the puzzle back together. This formed a very "GROOVY" looking cityscape. More cityscape views are pictured below.
Below are some wonderfully creative ceramic tiles created by fourth grade students, and abstract masks designed by fifth grade are pictured below the tiles. The masks were created in the style of Atlanta artist KIMMY CANTRELL (google him). He's an amazing artist who is a friend of mine. I've learned a lot from him! So did the kids! After the clay designs dried (about 2 weeks), I baked them in the KILN. Last step was to paint and glaze them. Pretty cool huh?

One of the most popular projects for the school year was "ALL THAT JAZZ". Fifth graders studied the artwork of North Carolina based artist ROMARE BEARDEN and they created jazz musicians using BEARDEN'S technique of mixed media collage.
One of my favorite projects this year was the "JIM DINE" Hearts. Jim Dine is a POP Artist who is well known for his unique HEART creations. Students designed their own JIM DINE hearts. After the hearts were finished, students were asked to take a good look at their projects and use their words to "interpret" what their art piece was saying to them. The prompt: "LOVE IS...." was given to them. Students wrote an ending to this prompt with a verbal interpretation of their heart design. I got some really cute responses about LOVE.
LOVE IS Complicated.
LOVE IS Pretty.
LOVE IS a disaster.
LOVE IS ugly.
LOVE IS colorful.
LOVE IS love.
LOVE IS confusing.
